GREEN MINDS ECO WORKSHOPS

1. COMPOSTING by MPSP
Composting is nature’s way of recycling, where organic wastes break down to become food for plants. Why compost? Organic wastes, such as food waste and yard waste make up 25% to 50% of what people throw away. While you may not be able to compost all of the organic waste you generate, composting can significantly cut down on your overall trash.

Benefits of composting

– You reduce your trash management expenses with lesser garbage
– You do not need to buy as much fertilizer when you can produce the compost yourself
– You are more mindful of your daily habits as you become more aware of the trash you generate overall during composting
– You feel great about contributing to greening the earth as you are truly completing the recycling loop

Find out more about composting by joining the workshop.

Nuclear

PETITION: SAY NO TO NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS IN MALAYSIA

The catastrophic nuclear accident in Fukushima, Japan had been a wake-up call to the world. While many countries have been persuaded to phase out existing nuclear reactor, the Malaysian Government plans otherwise. With Malaysia’s rich resources, nuclear energy is clearly not an option in Malaysia. It is not cheap, clean or safe to the environment and us. The plan to go nuclear must be put to an end.

Things you should know about nuclear

  • Nuclear fuel cycle requires enormous supply of energy compare to other energy sources.
  • Nuclear power plants produce ultra-hazardous, highly radioactive waste that will remain dangerous for more than a hundred thousand years.
  • Currently, there exist no technology for safe disposal of nuclear wastes permanently.
  • Human error is inevitable and unpredictable events in maintaining nuclear reactor is unpredictable (Fukushima tells us that).
  • Even under zero accidents, the existence of the plant itself is a threat to public health.
  • Development of nuclear energy requires high capital costs, constructions costs, engineering expertise costs, radioactive waste management, security and accident liabilities, and decommissioning—this is a challenge in our current economic situation.

The Petition aims to address the following.

  1. Stop the construction of nuclear power plants and facilities in Malaysia.
  2. Invest in energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.
  3. Disclose the details of the proposed nuclear power plant to the public.
  4. Demand that the ASEAN countries halt their promotion of nuclear power plants to protect our national interest and security.

Let us all work together to put a stop to this absurd plan!

Join us by signing the petition at Penang Green Council booth during the carnival. It will be opened throughout the Carnival (13 & 14 June, 10 AM – 10 PM).
